We are a church with a rich history that spans over a hundred years. Throughout every season, God has faithfully guided this community, using each chapter of our story to shape who we are today and prepare us for where He is leading us tomorrow.
We believe our history is not something that holds us back—it is a foundation that helps us build for the future. The stories, sacrifices, prayers, and faithfulness of those who came before us continue to impact who we are and what God is doing through us today.
Over the years, this community has embraced change, taken bold steps of faith, and followed the Lord’s leading through every season. Through challenges and opportunities, God has continued to be faithful, reminding us that the church is not defined only by where it has been, but by where God is calling it to go.
As we look ahead, we celebrate our past while faithfully pursuing God’s plans for the future. We believe the best days of ministry are not behind us—they are still ahead as we continue to know Jesus and make Jesus known.
In 1915, Community Church of God began as a small group of consecrated people who gathered together with a desire to worship God and faithfully serve Him.
Like many beginnings, the early years were not marked by large crowds or great resources. Growth was steady and slow, but it was still growth. This early congregation demonstrated a spirit of resilience and commitment, laying a foundation that future generations would build upon.
In 1935, the church took a significant step of faith and purchased its first church building on East Main Street. During this season, the congregation continued to grow in vision and commitment. A building fund was started, and through faithful giving and sacrifice, the church began preparing for what God had ahead.
During this time, the congregation became known as First Church of God. Though they did not have much by the world’s standards, they had something far greater—a faithful people committed to God’s mission.
As God continued to bless the congregation, the church began to outgrow its first building. In 1950, the church purchased a new facility on Gilbert Street, representing another step of faith and a vision for what God wanted to do through this community.
The Gilbert Street building became a place where generations worshiped, grew, served, and experienced God’s faithfulness.
During this season, the church continued reaching beyond itself. Wherever this congregation gathered, it sought to serve its neighbors, invest in children and families, support missions, and share the hope of Jesus.
The spiritual DNA of this congregation has always been faithfulness. Generations of people gave their time, resources, and energy to build upon what those before them had started.
By the early 1990s, the congregation had once again outgrown its building and began praying about what God’s next step would be.
The church already owned property on the north side of town, but as leaders sought the Lord, they felt God was calling them to reach the south side of Danville. They began searching for a place where they could continue their mission and serve the surrounding community.
During that search, several longtime members were walking across a property on Bowman Avenue while looking at another property nearby that was for sale. While they were there, the owner of the property they were walking through came outside and asked what they were doing.
When they shared that they were looking for a location for a church, she revealed something unexpected—she had always dreamed that one day her property would become a church.
What started as an ordinary moment became a reminder of God’s extraordinary timing. The congregation purchased the property, and in 1992 construction began on the current facility.
The vision for this new season was simple: Together we go. Together we grow.
The church sold the Gilbert Street building and spent two years worshiping at the YMCA while the new facility was being built. During this transition, the congregation also embraced a new identity and became Community Church of God—a name that reflected their desire to be a church not only located in the community, but truly serving the community.
This new building represented more than a new place to worship; it represented a renewed commitment to God’s mission of reaching people, building community, and making Jesus known.
Throughout its history, Community Church of God has faced challenges, seasons of change, and moments that required faith. But through it all, God has remained faithful.
The story of this church has always been bigger than buildings. It has been about people who gave faithfully so future generations could know Jesus.
The legacy they built reminds us that the church is not sustained by one person, one pastor, or one generation. The church moves forward when every generation embraces its calling and follows God together.
As we look toward the future, we honor where God has brought us while trusting where He is leading us.
The same God who guided this church in 1915 is still guiding us today.
Our story is not finished.
We continue to seek God, listen to His Spirit, and faithfully follow where He leads—because the best days of ministry are still ahead.
